Eighty-six adults and seven families used new homeless shelters last year

As of the end of 2025, a total of 86 adults have accessed the new enhanced emergency homeless accommodation in hostels in Bundoran and Letterkenny, with 16 currently availing of the service.

Seven families have also used the homeless shelters during this period, with two still availing of the accommodation.

These centres, which opened in April 2025, were designated as part of the Homeless Action Plan for the North-West Region (2023-2028).

The breakdown of the county’s homeless supports was released by Donegal County Council to Councillor Gerry McMonagle following a question he submitted ahead of Monday’s plenary council meeting in Lifford.

In their response, the council also revealed that people have been accommodated at the Bundoran and Letterkenny hostels for an average of 10 weeks.

In addition to the newly designated hostels, the local authority said they still utilises private emergency B&B accommodation if necessary depending on the specific circumstances, on a case by case basis.

Between January 2024 and March 2025, a total of 201 single adults, 16 families and eight couples used private emergency accommodation in Donegal.
