GARDAÍ in Donegal have raised serious concerns in the wake of the number of people arrested in the Division in the last week on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
In all, 18 people were detected by gardaí in the one-week period from Tuesday of last week to Tuesday of this week.
Thirteen of the arrests were for drink driving, while the other five arrests were for drug driving.
“These are extremely worrying figures,” a garda spokesperson said.
“We continue to urge all drivers not to even consider getting behind the wheel while under the influence of any type of intoxicant. We regularly make this appeal but unfortunately it seems to fall on deaf ears in some cases.”
The garda spokesperson said that despite everyone being aware of the risks associated with driving while under the influence, drivers are still continuing to take the risk.
“They risk their own life and the lives of others by doing so.
“We are continuously trying to make our roads safer by means of education and also by means of enforcement. We cannot do it alone. Too many lives are destroyed and also lost because of this type of irresponsible behaviour.”
