CHILDREN in Ballybofey nearly had their Easter Sunday ruined when brass-necked thieves stole dozens of little eggs hidden for an Easter Egg hunt.
Jackson’s Hotel, Ballybofey, had switched its annual Easter Egg hunt to the nearby Drumboe woods this year to accommodate for more children.
A total of 85 children from the community and staying at the hotel had signed up for what had promised to be an exciting afternoon out.
But when the children arrived at the woods with the Easter Bunny and the Mad Hatter, organisers quickly realised that the hidden eggs had been stolen.
The hotel’s leisure centre manager, Ms Dee McGettigan told the Donegal News that staff had hidden over 100 little eggs just twenty minutes before the hunt was to begin. She said: “When the Easter Bunny and the Mad Hatter went to hide the 130 plastic eggs containing little chocolate eggs, they met two families with children walking in the woods.
“They told them what they were doing and asked them not to remove the eggs and gave the children some chocolate eggs. When they arrived back with the kids, they were gone.”
The team at Jackson’s quickly came up with a Plan B. Thankfully, Mr Charlie Ferry, manager of Kavanagh’s SuperValu, Ballybofey, had donated a large Easter Egg for each child participating in the annual event, which Ms McGettigan said came as a ‘real blessing’ given the circumstances.
She said: “It’s a harsh lesson learned, but we never would have expected that someone would steal eggs that were hidden for a Children’s Easter egg hunt. Thankfully the children all went home happy with a large Easter Egg, thanks to Kavanagh’s.”
