FORMER Donegal defender Eamon McGee will open up about his struggles with addiction in a searingly honest television programme to air tonight.
McGee is the focus of the last programme in the current Laochra Gael series TG4 and it promises to be one of the best yet with searing honesty and expression about his time in a Donegal jersey and the challenges he faced.
For the Laochra Gael Series Finale, TG4 presents the compelling story of one of the country’s most formidable defenders.
Known for his tenacity and strength, McGee was a cornerstone of Donegal’s backline.
However, his journey has been far from straightforward, as he battled personal struggles that shaped his life both on and off the pitch.
Football provided an escape, and through sheer determination, he reclaimed his best form—culminating in Donegal’s historic All-Ireland victory in 2012 under Jim McGuinness’ leadership.
The programme is directed by Edel Fox, and participants include Neil McGee, Anne McElheney, Rory Kavanagh, Brian McEniff, Joanne Gillen, Stephen O’Neill, Steven McDonnell, Kieran Cunningham, Damien Ó Dónaill, and Daisy, Luca and Evie McGee.
Speaking ahead of the beginning of the latest Laochra Gael Series Uachtarán CLG, Jarlath Burns, said: “I warmly welcome the announcement of yet another series of Laochra Gael showcasing as it does some of the greatest players from the wider Gaelic games family.
“TG4 and Nemeton’s support of our games has been one of the hallmarks of its success story and it is something we value highly.“Away from their innovative live match day coverage, Laochra Gael adds greatly to their oDering promoting both the language and our games and all through the prism of great scéalta and great storytelling. The celebration of a 23rd series speaks for itself in terms of longevity, and I look forward to seeing the latest hour-long offerings. Well done to all involved in this latest project.”
The series is produced by NemetonTV, the independent production company from An Rinn in the Waterford Gaeltacht which has produced much of TG4’s acclaimed sports coverage.
The programme airs this evening on TG4 at 9.30pm.
