€900,000 allocated for three Donegal outdoor projects

THREE Donegal outdoor projects are set to receive €900,000 in funding under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.

Muckish Railway Walk has been allocated €500,000 to upgrade and complete a 1.5 km and final section to greenway standard, McManus Estate in Rossylongan, Donegal Town is getting €200,000 to improve and enhance the recreational amenity and associated historic cultural heritage, while Millside Walk Fintown will receive €200,000 to develop a 2 km recreational walking path for public use looping through Coillte forestry on the banks of the River Finn.

Welcoming the announcement, Donegal minister, Charlie McConalogue, said the funding further underpins the Government’s commitment to developing outdoor amenities as part of ‘Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors’ – the national outdoor recreation strategy.

“Donegal is an extremely popular tourism county with so much to offer when it comes to the outdoors, and the allocations for three projects will help to complete and improve them.

“New walking trails will be established for the first time under this programme, while kayaking, paddle-boarding and swimming projects, and other water-based activities will also be supported.

“Well done to those involved with these local projects, and these initiatives will be a great help to the local economy,” the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine commented.

The Donegal projects are among 69 projects across the country that will receive a total investment of €16.1 million.

Today’s announcement by the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, brings the overall allocation under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme to over €129 million since the Scheme was first launched in 2016.

“With the summer season now upon us, this is the ideal time for families and tourists to experience and enjoy the fantastic outdoor amenities here in Donegal,” Minister McConalogue added.
