Irish Water has announced that contracts have been signed for a €18.4 million investment in wastewater infrastructure in Killybegs, Bundoran, Glencolumbkille and Convoy.
Killybegs and Bundoran are two of forty-five towns in Ireland where untreated sewage is being discharged directly into the sea according to the EPA Urban Wastewater Report 2014.
Wastewater infrastructure in Glencolumbkille and Convoy was rated as ‘inadequate’ in the EPA report.
The contract was signed at the end of 2015 with Veolia Water Ireland and will ensure that wastewater treatment in the four towns is compliant with required EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive standards while also allowing for future economic growth in the towns.
The contract work will begin in the coming weeks with construction scheduled to start in the spring. The contract allows a period of 24 months for the completion of the construction of the four new wastewater treatment plants and associated sewer network.
Commenting on the contract signing, Michael Tinsley, Wastewater Capital Delivery Lead at Irish Water said, ‘The signing of the contract for these works on Donegal’s wastewater infrastructure is a key land mark in the delivery of wastewater treatment for Donegal that is fit for purpose while also allowing for future growth in the area. Irish Water is committed to ending the discharge of untreated wastewater in Bundoran and Killybegs, along with the other 43 locations identified in the recent EPA Urban Wastewater Treatment Report,” he said.
