€125,000 allocated for construction of footpath on dangerous Milford road

A SIGNIFICANT safety boost is on the way for the Milford community as €125,000 has been officially allocated from the Community Recognition Fund towards the construction of a much-needed footpath along the hazardous stretch of road from the Mulroy Woods to Lidl.

The funding marks a major milestone in efforts to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility in the area.

The road, frequently used by both locals and visitors, has long been a source of concern due to the absence of pedestrian infrastructure.

Without a footpath, residents, including schoolchildren, families, and elderly citizens, have been forced to walk along the roadside in close proximity to fast-moving traffic.

The new footpath will provide a vital safe route for those walking between the Mulroy Woods Hotel, nearby residential areas, and the Lidl supermarket.

Cllr Declan Meehan, who has been a strong advocate for this project, welcomed the funding announcement, describing it as a “vital investment in community safety and wellbeing”.

“This has been a long time coming, and I’m absolutely delighted to see this allocation secured,” Cllr Meehan said.

“The road between Mulroy Woods and Lidl is notoriously dangerous for pedestrians – it’s something I and many residents have raised time and again.

“This funding will now allow Donegal County Council to move forward with construction and make this route safe for everyone who uses it.”

“This isn’t just about infrastructure,” Cllr Meehan added.

“It’s about making our town more inclusive and accessible.

“Whether it’s parents with prams, older residents out for a walk, or young people heading to work or school, they all deserve to travel safely on foot. This project is a win for everyone in Milford.”

The allocation comes as part of the Government’s Community Recognition Fund, which supports towns and villages that have welcomed significant numbers of new arrivals, including those fleeing conflict.

The fund is designed to enhance community facilities and infrastructure in recognition of these contributions.

Cllr Meehan also acknowledged the strong community voice behind the project, noting the role that local engagement played in bringing the issue to the forefront.

“The people of Milford made their concerns known, and it’s their persistence that helped push this forward,” he continued.

“I want to thank the countless people who raised this with me, and who brought this directly to the Council for their attention.

“Your voices were heard.”

This development is part of a broader commitment to improving rural and regional infrastructure, ensuring that all residents, regardless of location, have access to safe and connected communities.
