E-scooter information event to take place in Letterkenny ahead of new laws

WITH new laws coming into effect on the use of e-scooters, a public information event is to take place in Letterkenny.

Gardaí will host the information event, which will take place in Letterkenny Shopping Centre on Thursday, May 15, between 5pm and 6.30pm.

New laws on e-scooters come into effect from Tuesday, May 20. Among the new laws will be that users must be 16 years or older, obey a speed limit of 20km/h. E-scooters are banned from footpaths and can’t carry any passengers.

A garda spokesperson said: “E-Scooters are a convenient mode of transport, but you have a duty of care to yourself and other road users. You also need to be sure that your e-scooter is road legal.

“E-scooters are allowed in cycle or bus lanes and on local, regional or national roads. They must have front and rear lights, a bell or audible warning device, reflectors and front and rear brakes on their e-scooter and it must be kept in a roadworthy condition at all times.

“Obey signals given by a garda or school warden and follow the same rules of the road that apply to cyclists, including traffic lights, road signs, and all types of pedestrian crossings.”

Failure to adhere to Road Traffic legislation may incur a fine or a court summons.

At the Letterkenny public information event gardaí will issue information leaflets in relation to the law that applied to e-scooter use and also high-visibility vests to distribute e-scooter users.

“Everyone is welcome to call in,” said a garda spokesperson.
