Donegal 0-19 Mayo 2-13
James Durcan scored a last-gasp wonder goal to deny Donegal victory against Mayo in their league opener in Ballybofey tonight.
Declan Bonner’s men started well and moved 4-2 ahead but Mayo then struck a point before James Carr’s shot ended up in the net.
Donegal were wasteful at times, but they still kicked five in-a-row with Ciaran Thompson scoring a brace, while Caolan McGonagle, Michael Murphy, and Jamie Brennan were all on target.
Fergal Boland had the final say of the half and that left Mayo trailing by two at the break.
Donegal extended their lead out to four by the 42nd minute, but the Connacht side then struck the next three points.
Michael Langan and Ryan McHugh responded with points to push Donegal three in front once again.
The home side couldn’t kill off the match and Mayo got back to within one by the 73rd minute.
Bonner’s men dug deep and Ciaran Thompson swung over a beauty and man-of-the-match Murphy landed a free to push Donegal three ahead.
However, Mayo kept going and James Durcan sent a superb shot into the top corner in the 78th minute to grant Mayo a share of the spoils, and Donegal were kicking themselves as they left the pitch.
