A DUNGLOE native has become the first ever Donegal man to be elected to the prestigious position of President of the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU).
Mr Rory O’Donnell (46) was elected at the union’s National Conference and AGM in Galway on Sunday.
The new president of the 1,800 member union is the proprietor of O’Donnell’s Pharmacy in Stranacorkra, Derrybeg, and has been IPU Vice-President for the past two years.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Mr O’Donnell said he was both delighted and honoured to have been elected. “I am the first Donegal person to hold this position and I feel deeply honoured and I promise to do my best over the next two years for Irish pharmacies, their staff and customers.” he said.
“The position of president consists of a two-year term and is a very big commitment. I will be the leader of a very big team and oversee different structures of the union at a local and national level,” he added.
Mr O’Donnell said his role will also include working with other stakeholders in the health sector such as the government and its various departments as well as the HSE.
He added that a number of issues he will be pushing will include the shortage of certain essential medicines as well to increase the number of medicines that can be bought over the counter without prescription.
