Duffy calling the shots for Robert Emmets

By Matthew Wilson

Robert Emmets boss John Duffy is hoping his side can be competitive in the Junior Football Championship in order to try and achieve a top three group finish.

Preparations are going well for Duffy’s outfit but they’ve suffered two ACL injuries in recent weeks which have come as a massive blow for the group ahead of their championship opener this weekend.

“We’ve had a couple of injuries. Dean Hughes and Lee McLaughlin both suffered ACL injuries over the last four to six weeks so unfortunately both of them are going under the knife in the next month or so, they were two regular starters for us.

“We’re missing another few who are away for the summer but I’m sure it’s the same with everybody, you deal with what you have.

“They’re a good, committed group of lads and if we bring our A game with us then hopefully we’ll compete.”

Robert Emmets have been placed in Group A and will face the likes of Pettigo, Naomh Padraig Lifford, Urris and St Mary’s Convoy in their four group encounters.

The Ballyshannon native is expecting a difficult couple of games but insists that himself and the side aren’t looking beyond their first game and the challenge that Pettigo will bring at present.

“We’re going okay. We’ve a big task, we’re not looking beyond Pettigo. Pettigo are a side doing really well this year so, they beat us in the league fairly, there was no complaints. It’s a tough opener for us but hopefully things go well on the day.

“We’re going to have to bring our A game and if we do then hopefully we’ll be competitive.”

Robert Emmets ended an 11-year wait for a championship victory last year when they overcame Naomh Colmcille.

When discussing the objectives for this campaign, Duffy stated that he hopes to achieve a top three finish and advance to the next phase of the competition.

He understands the task at hand but reiterated that the sole focus is currently on their meeting with Pettigo on Sunday.

“The aim is to finish in the top three and progress to the quarter-finals but it’s going to be difficult. There are some really good teams in the group and it won’t be easy by any stretch. But Pettigo is the first target, we’ll deal with that and see what comes afterwards.”
