THERE was a tense stand-off in Drumkeen this morning as residents awoke to find GMC Sierra, contractors for Irish Water, digging holes for water meters.
Gardai were sent to the village and observed the interaction between residents and the contractors.
Residents complained that holes had been dug outside their homes without permission and called on the contractors to fill them in again.
The contractors worked on and installed meters outside houses where no one was at home.
Sin Féin Cllr Gary Doherty was contacted after some residents awoke to the sound of the diggers outside.
“The contractors did fit some meters where people were out. People were caught off guard and hadn’t been expecting the contractors. I hope the residents and contractors can come to some sort of agreement so that the gardai can leave the area and things remain peaceful,” Cllr Doherty said.
Residents plan to protest tomorrow if the contractors attempt to continue to install meters.
