Drug detection dog in training for Donegal

CLLR Rena Donaghey’s motion at Monday’s Plenary County Council meeting calling for a dedicated Garda drugs dog unit to combat “the awful scourge of the use of illicit drugs in our communities”, got a faster than anticipated answer.

She said drugs were wreaking havoc on people, especially the youth adding that “sentences where nowhere near severe enough”.

She complained there was no drug unit above a line from Dublin to Galway but commended local gardai for their Trojan efforts to combat the scourge.

“We need a Garda drug unit in Letterkenny for the whole county and they need to be adequately equipped,” she added. Seconding the motion

Cllr Donal Mandy Kelly said “it is the world we live in and drugs are everywhere”.

Cllr Gerry McMonagle informed the meeting that there is currently a drugs detection dog in training in the county.

“You might not have to wait very long”, he told Cllr Donaghey.
