Dramatic rise in assaults and drugs abuse

LESS than one in five burglaries in the Letterkenny garda area have been detected. The latest Garda crime figures released on Wednesday evening show burglaries are up 34 per cent, drug abuse has almost doubled and assaults are also on the rise in the Letterkenny Garda District.
There were 211 burglaries reported in the district compared to 157 for the same period last year.
The Letterkenny Garda District covers a wide catchment area spreading out as far as Lifford, Newtowncunningham and Brockagh.
Speaking on Wednesday at a meeting of the Letterkenny Joint Policing Committee (JPC) Inspector Kevin Gately moved to allay concerns over the low detection rate saying they were working diligently to improve the detection rate of 18 per cent for burglaries.
