Downings well beaten in Ulster quarter-final

Ballyhaise 4-15 Downings 0-11

Downings were well beaten in the Ulster Intermediate Quarter-final by Cavan champions Ballyhaise in Breffni Park.

The Donegal champions looked up for the game with Paddy McElwee getting two early points, but that would be their only scores until the 20th minute as they went 1-6 to 0-2 down.

Johnny McGroddy added two frees either side of a Lorcan Connor score from play, but Ballyhaise continued their dominance and Padraig Moore added two goals on top of the earlier one from Adam Heaslip with the score at 3-9 to 0-5 at the break.

Downings didn’t give up but the contest looked well over already as McElwee added two more frees and Oisin Boyce and Johnny McGroddy kicked good scores from play.

Keelan McGroddy and McElwee added further points for Kevin ‘Cookie’ Gallagher’s men but Ballyhaise equalled that points tally in the second half, while they added a goal from the penalty spot by Kevin Tierney.
