Downings hoping to land Comórtas crown in Cork

Downings missed out on the All-Ireland Junior Gaeltacht title last year, but they are determined to go one better in 2016.

Andy Connor’s team were in flying form in last year’s championship in Ardara, but the final was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The decider was then played in October, but by that stage, Downings were struggling and they didn’t give a true account of themselves as they lost out to the Aran Islands.

They want to make up for that disappointment by claiming the All-Ireland crown this weekend, and they will travel to the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta in Cork with confidence.

“When we set out at the start of the year, one of our aims was to win the All-Ireland Gaeltacht,” said Connor.

“We could have won it last year, but we lost out in the final to the Aran Islands.

“They’re not going this year, and we’re probably in better form this season, so hopefully we can do the business down there.”
