Downings pair Ronan Gallagher and Johnny McGroddy were key members of the DCU team that won the Sigerson Cup on Wednesday night at the Connacht Centre of Excellence in Mayo.
Gallagher started at half back for the North Dublin college as they got the better of county rivals UCD by a score of 1-16 to 3-6, while McGroddy came off the bench in the second half.
The win gave DCU their sixth Sigerson title and first since 2020 when Brendan McCole captained the side to the title.
Ryan O’Toole’s first half goal for UCD made it level at the break at 0-6 to 1-3 and it stayed with no more than a point separating the sides until Ethan Dunne’s three pointer helped DCU go five clear.
Callum Bolton got a second goal for the South Dublin men but Séan Fox’s men rallied from this and hit the next five scores as McGroddy was introduced.
Bolton got his second and UCD’s third goal in added time but it was too little, too late for the side, whose squad included Termon’s Bobby McGettigan.
DCU had been beaten by UCD in Round 2A of the competition but they made their way through to the final four after winning well against ATU Sligo by 3-14 to 0-10 in Round 3 and beating TUS Midlands by 4-14 to 3-13 in the quarter-final.
They then defeated reigning champions Ulster University 0-14 to 0-10 in the semi-final the week before, with St Eunan’s man Ronan McGeehin in nets for the Ulster side.
