Well-known Letterkenny football fan Stephen ‘Dotsy’ Doherty is celebrating this week after winning a dream trip to Euro 2012.
Stephen was the winner of the top prize in the Keadue Rovers FC draw last Friday night and the local Post Office clerk couldn’t believe his ears when he got the call.
His Letterkenny Rovers club-mate Liam O’Donnell delivered the good news.
“Liam rang me to say that he had good news and that I’d won a trip to the Euros, I thought he was taking the hand to be honest at the start,” he said.
“It clicked then and I remembered buying three tickets for €20 off Packie Gallagher at a Donegal Youth League meeting some time ago. Sure enough, within half-an-hour Packie was on the phone. I couldn’t believe it. It’s a dream trip to be looking forward to going to watch Ireland at a tournament like this.”
For his €20, Stephen won a trip for two, flying from Dublin to Gdansk on June 13th, with transfers and match tickets to the games against Spain and Italy, as well as six nights accomodation.
His good friend, Letterkenny town coucillor Tadhg Culbert, will accompany him on the trip.
“I had booked the week off anyway and was going to head down to Limerick to watch my nephew, Gareth Doherty, playing for Donegal in the Kennedy Cup.
“This has come so out of the blue, I can’t wait for it now. People have been saying to me that I should sell the package and make a few quid – they must be mad!”
Stephen joins the legions of Irish fans who are heading off to Poland to support the Irish team, including his Letterkenny Rovers colleagues Dessie Kelly, Eric White, James Barclay and Gerry Meehan.
