THE DONEGAL Donkey Sanctuary has launched a fundraising campaign after their rescue vehicle was destroyed in a freak accident.
Danny Curran, who runs the Sanctuary, was involved in the accident last Tuesday night when the vehicle crashed after he swerved to avoid a deer on the road. The vehicle and the Sanctuary’s horsebox were wrecked beyond repair and as a result the charity has had to suspend all of its rehoming and taking in of donkeys for the foreseeable future.
Sandra Curran said they are simply unable to function without the vehicle and horsebox as they are unable to transport the animals. She said Danny was returning to the Sanctuary late on Tuesday night after making welfare calls when the accident happened.
Sandra said: “He emerged unscathed and no other vehicles were involved. Thankfully no donkeys were in transit at the time. Danny swerved to avoid a deer which appeared at a sharp bend on the road and the vehicle mounted the ditch before plummeting 15 feet into the field below.”
Even though the vehicle is insured Sandra said all indications are that any payment received from the insurance company will fall far short of what is required to purchase a new vehicle and horsebox to carry out their vital work.
The sanctuary has set up a Go Fund Me page ‘Donkey Rescue Vehicle Appeal’ and they have set a target of €30,000.
