A DOWNINGS man who has been an Special Needs Assistant (SNA) for nearly a decade has left his job to go into showbiz full-time.
Donegal’s most followed man Eric Roberts began his online journey during lockdown when he downloaded TikTok, a hugely popular content creating app.
Enjoying making content and making people laugh, Eric rose to fame.
Describing himself as being “very sarcastic” Eric’s content is very light hearted.
“I am very transparent with what I post online.
“I post a lot of family life and my nephew Oisin is a huge part of my content.
“In between those I put up comedic Irish satirical humour, stuff that really resonates with the Irish community and people from around the world seem to enjoy it as well,” he said.
Never taking himself too seriously, Eric said a lot of his content is poking fun at himself.
“I’m just genuinely trying to make people laugh and make people’s day a little bit better,” he said.
Getting to work with loads of amazing brands last year, Eric has gone from strength to strength with another incredible year ahead of him.
“I am presenting with JDs, the LADBible and earlier on in the year I was actually given a free car from iMotors that are based here in Donegal.
“I am their new brand ambassador along with Michael Murphy.
“It is absolutely incredible to be given a brand new car, my whole family were in complete shock and now they’re constantly asking me for lifts and torturing me,” he laughed.
However, with a jam-packed schedule ahead of him Eric recently came to the decision to step down from his position as a Special Needs Assistant which he has been pursuing for the past eight years.
“It was extremely emotional leaving and saying goodbye to the staff.
“I had been in that particular school for a few years so I had built up an excellent relationship with the staff and students.
“It was an emotional day but it was also an exciting day, everyone knew why I was leaving and everyone has always been very supportive,” he said.
With constant pinch me moments coming Eric’s way he said showbiz is new territory for him.
“It is something that is not really heard of for local rural Donegal lads to be going into showbiz full-time, it’s laughable almost when I say it out loud,” he said.
Kicking off his year with lots of travelling, filming a number of television shows and doing a bit of stand-up comedy with the BBC, Eric has his most nerve-wracking gig to date ahead of him next month, his wedding.
Promising to keep his phone in his back pocket whilst tying the knot, Eric said he is looking forward to enjoying the big day with his soon-to-be wife Niamh.
