DONEGAL’S focus is now on their NFL opener with Down on January 30, after they were defeated by Fermanagh on Wednesday night and exited the Dr McKenna Cup.
Rory Gallagher’s team travelled to Brewster Park needing to win by five points to progress to the semi-finals of the competition.
However, they were well-beaten by a superior Fermanagh team, and they will now have to arrange challenge matches to get up to speed ahead of the meeting with the Mourne county in two weeks’ time.
“It’s not the be-all and end-all,” said Gallagher, after the match.
“We would have loved to get through, but we have 13 under 21s in our set-up at the minute and it was good to get them competitive games against Down, who are in Division 1; St Mary’s who are a formidable team; and Fermanagh, who are in Division 2 and reached the All-Ireland quarter-final (last season).
“We would have loved to have got through to the semi-finals but we’re not there. We’ll just train away at the weekend and our full focus will be on Down on the 30th of January.”
