DONEGAL’S Covid vaccination roll-out is starting to show signs of slowing down.
Latest figures from the HSE highlight the reduced demand for a programme which accelerated through much of last year.
As numbers presenting to the Vaccination Centre in Letterkenny continue to drop, the HSE is looking at opening up pop-up vaccination centres at different locations across the county, and country, over the next number of weeks.
HSE data also shows reduced demand for Covid testing, lower rates of test positivity and a reduction in the number of cases ending up in Letterkenny University Hospital.
In the last two weeks of January, the team at the Letterkenny Covid Vaccination Centre vaccinated 2,150 people – less than half the number (4,700) who received the jab in just one week before Christmas (13-19 December).
Meanwhile, recent pressures for PCR tests at the Community Testing centres in Letterkenny and Donegal Town have eased.
The Community Testing centres had been functioning at full capacity over the Christmas and New Year period due to the rise in positive rates of Covid-19.
Almost 8,000 Covid-19 tests were carried out in County Donegal in the final week of the year. Last week there were just 1,118 tests carried out in Letterkenny and Donegal Town.
It comes as the Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said Omicron is unlikely to be the last variant of concern.
“The pandemic is not over and with a significant level of infection nationally, Covid-19 still poses a risk to public health. In this regard, there will be an ongoing need to retain some public health measures to reduce risk.”
