DONEGAL County Council’s natural Christmas tree recycling campaign has been declared a huge success after another busy festive season.
At the end of December, the council announced the return of the innovative scheme, partnering with the Loughs Agency to enhance local rivers and waterways by repurposing old, natural Christmas trees.
Residents of the county were encouraged to recycle their trees following the festive period, which will now be repurposed to stabilise riverbanks, reduce erosion and create habitats for wildlife.
At last week’s Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District meeting, Caroline McCleary, of Donegal County Council’s Environment Services, described this year’s campaign as a “huge success”.
Trees from the 2024 pilot scheme are already being used for green engineering along the banks of the River Cummirk in Donegal.
The Christmas Recycling Campaign supports the Donegal Climate Action Plan 2024–2029, which sets out 139 actions to reduce emissions and promote a circular economy.
