Donegal Youth Council to ‘shake up’ sports

youth council

DONEGAL Youth Council is launching their ‘Shake Up Sports’ initiative tomorrow (Friday) in the Finn Valley Centre in Stranorlar.

Shake Up Sports is a major project that members of the Youth Council have been responsible for developing since the beginning of this year, with the first event set to welcome 100 6th Class students from the surrounding Finn Valley area to take part.

Shake Up Sports will give each participant an opportunity to learn more about the importance of sport, with the emphasis on fun and activity rather than competition.

The events, which they plan to roll out across the county in the coming months, have been developed by members of the Donegal Youth Council following extensive research and consultation with young people, and they aim to offer young people the opportunity to sample alternative sports outside of those considered “mainstream”.

The event will also have information on different sporting groups in the surrounding areas providing young people with the opportunity to make links and follow up on any interest developed on the day.

Sports young people will sample on the day include Basketball, Futsal, Ultimate Frisbee, Tag Rugby, Martial Arts and Field Athletics. Trained adult coaches will be working with our Youth Councillors on the day to deliver a fun and interactive event.

Shake Up Sports will have input from a range of organisations, including Donegal Sports Partnership, Donegal Youth Service, HSE Health Promotion, with youth councillors also providing a short talk on the morning for the young people as to why they developed the initiative and why they feel it is important.

The Donegal Youth Council is a group of 36 young people aged 12-18 years, who identify issues and promote projects to improve the lives of young people in Donegal. Donegal Youth Council is funded by Donegal County Council, HSE Health Promotion and the Department of Children & Youth Affairs and is co-ordinated at local level by the Donegal Youth Service.
