The impact of Donegal women in Glasgow is to be celebrated at a special event on Friday.
Many people have moved from Donegal to Scotland through the generations in search of a better life.
That connection will be marked at this week’s event.
On the eve of St Brigid’s Day, Glasgow City Council and the Consulate General of Ireland, with support from Donegal County Council, will host an event to look at the contributions that Irish women have made to Glasgow, and their wider communities.
Panelists will look at archive and heritage material and the stories contained within, as well as the projects using visual arts to tell the stories of the women of the Irish diaspora.
There will be a specific focus on the contributions of Donegal women, given the strong historical links between Donegal and the West of Scotland.
The event forms part of Glasgow 850 – a year-long celebration marking the 850th anniversary of the city’s Burgh status.
Lord Provost Councillor Jacqueline McLaren will provide the civic welcome.
The event will be introduced by the Consul General of Ireland, Jerry O’Donovan, and moderated by Bailie Annette Christie, Glasgow City Convenor for Culture, Sport and International Relations (and Chair of Glasgow Life).
Panelists will include:
Dr Niamh Brennan, Archivist, Culture Division, Donegal County Council
Caroline Carr, Assistant Curator, Culture Division, Donegal County Council
Dr Irene O’Brien, · City Archives and Records Manager, Museums and Collections, Glasgow Life
Dr Rachael Flynn, Artist and Researcher, University of the West of Scotland
Christina McBride, Visual Artist, Glasgow School of Art.
