LETTERKENNY woman Mary Maguire was among the reader’s at this morning’s funeral in Rome for Pope Benedict.
Ms Maguire read the second reading which was from the First letter of St Peter (1:3-9).
The reading praises God’s mercy giving the faithful “a new birth” as his children and “by raising Jesus Christ from the dead, so that we have a sure hope and the promise” of eternal life in heaven.
Ms Maguire’s involvement in the mass was due to her work in the Diocese of Raphoe.
She was one of a number of Donegal people to travel to St Peter’s following the former pontiff’s death.
Monsignor Kevin Gillespie, who worked with Pope Benedict and travelled to many countries with him while working in Rome in the Congregation for the Clergy, is present as is Fr Eamonn Mc Laughlin, Downings. He is currently working in the Congregation for Clergy, Rome.
It is understood retired Bishop Philip Boyce also made the journey.
