Donegal V Dublin in bottle-top battle

BIG match madness has gripped Donegal in many ways in the run-up to today’s (Sunday’s) semi-final including the knitting of ‘Innocent’ bottle-top hats in the colours of the two teams.

Grainne Shiels from Portanblagh has used her knitting talents to knit hundreds of wee bottle-top hats to fit the innocent smoothie drinks bottles in recent years, thus raising hundreds of euro of the Age Action charity.

However, this week she decided to knit a bottle-top hat in both the colours of the Donegal team and one in the colour of the Dublin team and brought them to show staff at the Donegal News.

Grainne has taken part in the ‘Knit one, help loads’ fund raiser run by the drinks company to assist Age Action Ireland.

The money raised goes towards helping keep older people in Ireland warm in winter.
“I thought it would be fun to knit the bottle top hats in the Donegal and Dublin colours before Sunday’s match. I’ve already promised this pair to someone so I’ll just have to knit another,” Grainne said.

To date more than 160,000 little hats have been knit all over the country raising €40,000 and much needed awareness for Age Action Ireland. This year they are aiming for 80,000 little knitted or crocheted hats.

The woolly hats sit on top of Innocent smoothies in shops across Ireland. For every bottle sold, Innocent give 25 cent to the charity.
