The Killybegs man, who is Donegal’s Central Council delegate, will be proposed for the prestigious position by the County Board after Killybegs successfully tabled his candidacy yesterday at Convention.

Club Chairman John Cunningham made the proposal which was seconded by Fanad Gaels’ Fiona Shiels.

“It is with great pride that we formally propose Niall for the position – his knowledge of and commitment to the GAA is second to none,” Cunningham said.

“He left Ireland in the mid-1980s to go to London and he served as Chairman and Secretary of the Tir Chonaill Gaels club. He was instrumental in acquiring the lease for the site in Greenford.

“He has served on the London County Board and they’re well used to Niall in Croke Park!

“He is very highly regarded within the GAA. He was in Newcastle for a time and set up the Newcastle Gaels club whom he served as Chairman.

“When he came back to Donegal he got involved with the Killybegs club. He is currently the Chairman of our Development Committee, is a member of the County Board and is our Central Council Delegate as well as being on the Rules Advisory.

“The best compliment I can pay Niall is to say that if you talk to him in confidence, it will stay in confidence.”

The likes of Michael Gillespie (Kilcar) and Tom Daly (Ballyshannon) have previously been elected as Trustees of the GAA.
