DONEGAL County Council is to receive a funding increase to help older people and those with a disability live independently.
The local authority will receive just over €2.3 million, 80 per-cent of which is funded by the exchequer.
Confirming the allocation Letterkenny councillor Jimmy Kavanagh said the money will help those who need and deserve support to live in their own homes for as long as possible.
The allocation will also reduce dependency on the health service, Councillor Kavanagh added.
“The government is working to build stronger safer communities and it is important we support people to live in their own homes for as long as they possibly can.
“These grants have a really positive impact on the quality of life of the people who benefit from them.
“They play an important role in helping people with a disability and those reaching an age in life where they are less mobile to continue to live independently in their own homes,” he said.
Grants of up to €30,000 are available to assist people with a disability in carrying out necessary works to make a house more suitable for their needs.
Up to €8,000 is available to assist older people in having repairs or improvements carried out while up to €6,000 can be drawn down for mobility aids.
Councillor Kavanagh added, “Another positive aspect of the Housing Adaptation Grant is that it helps to create employment for local contractors.”
Announcing the money, Minister of State for Local Government and Planning, Peter Burke TD said the grants play a vitally important role in helping people to stay in their own homes and within their own communities for as long as possible.
