THOSE hoping for a white Christmas are set to be disappointed as ‘Storm Eva’ makes it way to Donegal tomorrow.
Met Éireann have issued a status orange weather warning for Doengal as it looks like the county is to be hit by severe winds.
Storm Eva will come into effect from 1pm tomorrow, (Wedneday) and remain valid until shortly before midnight, Met Éireann has warned. Other counties to be affected by ‘Storm Eva’ include Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo and Clare.
A spokesperson for Met Éireann said: “Storm Eva is expected to track to the west and Northwest of Ireland over the course of the day bring some severe winds to coastal counties.”
“These southerly winds will see speeds of between 60-65km/h, and could gust up to 110- 120km/h at times between 4pm and 9pm.”
Continuing, the spokesperson said that people should “be aware” in these areas so they can take preventative action.
“Gusts will reach 110km/h in the evening with wind speeds averaging 60-65km/h during the day. Storm Eva is all about the wind. It will be wet but the main concern is the wind speed.
“We wouldn’t see the flooding that came with Desmond but people should still be aware of the affected areas.”
Elsewhere, the Road Safety Authority (RSA), has called motorists to exercise caution while using the roads.
A spokesperson said: “Beware of objects being blown out onto the road. Expect the unexpected. Watch out for falling/fallen debris on the road and vehicles veering across the road.
“Control of a vehicle may be affected by strong cross winds. High sided vehicles and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to strong winds. Allow extra space between you and vulnerable road users such as cyclists and motorcyclists. Drive with dipped headlights at all times and monitor radio weather broadcasts while travelling.”
Issuing advice to pedestrians and cyclists, the spokesperson added: “Be seen. Wear bright clothing with reflective armbands or a reflective belt. Take extra care when crossing the road or cycling in extremely windy conditions as a sudden gust of wind could blow you into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
“Walk on a footpath, not in the street. Walk on the right hand side of the road, facing traffic if there are no footpaths.”
