The girl’s older sister has been transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where she is in a critical condition.

Police closed the road at the junction with the Tamnaherin Road and Tirbracken Road, to allow a full forensic examination of the scene. However, it was re-opened at 1am.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said there had been heavy rain all day – with surface water causing difficult driving conditions across the North West.

Police are appealing for information and asking anyone who saw the incident to contact the Collision Investigation Team at Maydown Police Station.
