Donegal teams performing well at Macron Cup

The Macron Cup started on Wednesday and runs through to Saturday and Donegal has Three teams involved at different age groups.

The Donegal Schoolboy 2002 team managed by Kevin McHugh are playing in the 2002 elite section which includes Leeds United, North Ireland Development Squad alongside Belverdere FC and a host of County teams.

They started very brightly defeating North Dublin Schoolboys 2 -0 in their first group match with Swilly Rovers Dylan Dorrian and Drumkeen’s Jason McDaid on the scoresheet. The next game was the top of the table clash against Galway Schoolboys and won easily with a 3-0 scoreline. Conor Black (Kilmacrennan Celtic) and a own goal give them a half time lead and Dunfanaghy’s Calvin Murray finished off the scoring.

They are now very strong favorites to top the group and reach Friday’s Semi Finals which looks like including other Group leaders Leeds United, Belverdere FC and either Athlone or Northern Ireland.

Kildrum Tigers are competing in the 2002 age group and had a 2- 0 win in the opening game against Clare Schoolboys with goals coming from Anton Murtagh and Aaron O’Donnell. They play Colorado Rapids today with an evening kickoff.

Finn Harps Academy are competing in the 2000 age group and have full points out of two games. They defeated Wicklow Schoolboys with the only goal of the game coming from European 800m finalist and Dungloe Town player Aaron McGlynn. The second game was won with ease against Salthill Devons second string which are made up of 2001 born players and had a comfortable victory winning 5 – 0. Goalscorers were Lorcan McGrady 2, Kyle McCarron, Darren McElwaine and Ryan O’Donnell.

They have a top clash today were the three points are vital as Edenderry FC have a better goal difference. Semi Final spots are hard to call but looks like Finn Harps or Edenderry FC, Ipswich Town, Galway Schoolboys & possibly Roscommon. All Semi Finals are played Friday with Finals on Saturday.
