DONEGAL Sinn Fín party activists have endorsed Pádraig Mac Lochlainn and Pearse Doherty to campaign for reelection in the new countywide constituency. The convention also resolved to decide on the possibility of a third Donegal candidate at a later date.

The meeting was chaired by Westminster candidate for Fermanagh/South Tyrone, Michelle Gildernew MP, who praised the work of Donegal’s two republican TDs.

Ms Gildernew said: “Sinn Fein is fighting austerity north and south and our members are now preparing for two vital election campaigns which will propel us towards an Ireland of equals. Republicans in Donegal are blessed to have two of the most capable representatives in this country representing our politics at a national level.

“Padraig and Pearse are also lucky to have such a strong organisation on the ground to assist in their reelection campaign. I have no doubt that such a combination will deliver the result that the people of this area needs.”

Deputies Mac Lochlainn and Doherty said it was a privilege to be selected to run for Sinn Fein. ” We are honoured to again contest an election to represent the people of Donegal on behalf of Sinn Fein. This election is the most important in decades. This is the Irish people’s opportunity to move our country in a new direction – away from the failed right wing policies which were created by Fianna Fail and are now being ruthlessly imposed by Fine Gael and Labour.

“This is an opportunity for the people of Donegal to say that it is not acceptable for Letterkenny General Hospital to receive that lowest funding per patient ratio of any hospital in the state, that it is not okay to reduce our local authority staff by over a third and that the northwest region is the only area in Ireland without access to rail or dual carriageway connection to Dublin.

‘It is not acceptable that our services are being decimated while struggling people are being told to pay more taxes.

‘This election is a chance to put Ireland on a fair path – where the very wealthiest in society are asked to pay their fair share and we can begin to invest in our communities once again.

‘A Sinn Fein led government is the only way this can happen. We now look forward to engaging with our communities throughout this campaign in order to ask people to endorse our alternative and help rebuild Ireland.’
