DONEGAL is set to return a ‘Yes’ vote in the Marriage Equality Refefenedum.

With 65 per cent of the boxes open in the Donegal North East constituency the Yes’ vote is running at 55 per cent.

The same pattern is emerging from the South West.

Counting of votes is continuing at the two count centres in Letterkenny and Donegal Town and a final tally is due around 1pm.

Speaking to the Donegal News at the Bonagee Community Centre, Sinead Murray of the Yes campaign said it was an ‘historic day for Donegal’.

“When I was growing up it was illegal to be gay in Ireland,” she said.

“It is amazing how far we have travelled. The eyes of the world are on Ireland today- it is an amazing, historical day,” she said.

Brian Flanagan of the No campaign said he was disappointed and claimed the Yes vote would be akin to a ‘forest fire out of control’.

“The decadent society relentlessly digs its own grave. This is a victory for made made religion,” he said.
