DONEGAL has seen a surge in callouts to tackle rodents.
Ireland’s leading pest control provider, Rentokil says it has recorded a 22 per cent increase in callouts for rodents in the northwest region since January this year compared to January to October last year.
Donegal, Cavan, Leitrim, Monaghan, Mayo, Roscommon, and Sligo are the counties most affected by increases in reporting of rodents in the 10-month timeframe.
Rats are widely regarded as the country’s number one pest threat, and preventative rodent-proofing solutions are advised as one of the best methods to help prevent them from gaining access inside premises.
According to Rentokil, rodents are the top pest threat that premises and businesses need to be aware of this winter as they will explore buildings in search of food, warmth, and shelter from the cold.
The presence of rodents in a business also poses a serious reputational risk, as well as a health risk due to the potential spread of diseases through their bodily fluids and excrement.
Rentokil says it is important homeowners and business owners are aware of the significant damage that they can cause to property, goods and assets.
Rodents must gnaw on things every day in order to prevent their teeth from growing out of control, and as a result, they can chew through utility lines, electrical wires, and other key infrastructure which can be both a fire risk and expensive to replace.
Signs of rodent activity to look out for include rodent droppings, scratching noises, and footprints.
Colm Moore, Area Technical Manager for Rentokil issued advice for anyone concerned about the presence of rodents in their home or business.
