Donegal schools honoured by Nature Hero Awards

The Nature Hero Awards have honoured five schools across Donegal for their fantastic efforts in biodiversity and environmental education. These schools are: Carndonagh C.S., St. Peters N.S. Mountcharles, Scoil Aodh Rua agus Nuala, Gairmscoil Mhic Diarmada, St. Davaddog’s N.S..

The Nature Hero Awards are coordinated by Biodiversity in Schools and sponsored by Donegal’s own, Glenveagh.
Over 300 primary schools across Ireland registered for the awards.
The awards are extremely beneficial for young people as they help schools manage their local land, improve biodiversity and educate young nature heroes throughout Ireland.

The primary schools that won the awards received certificates to acknowledge their hard work over the year.

A few schools even received special recognition for their exemplary work. Sustainably- made, Irish, wooden Nature Hero Award plaques were distributed to these schools.

Spot prizes were also handed out to schools who particularly excelled. Carndonagh CS was honoured with a Special Commendation for Habitat Data collection for their detailed recording of hedge and tree species on campus. This project emphasised that in order to protect nature one must know nature.

Speaking about the partnership, Annette McGarry, Head of Community Engagement at Glenveagh commented, “We’re proud to collaborate with Biodiversity in Schools on this excellent educational initiative, and delighted to see so many schools and children participate this year. We congratulate all the schools on their fantastic achievements. Biodiversity plays such an important role in every community and we’re incredibly proud to support this brilliant initiative over the last four years”.

Speaking about the 2025 competition, Mark Nolan, Director of Biodiversity in Schools commented: “We’ve been amazed by the incredible work undertaken by schools across the country to help their local biodiversity. A massive well done to all the schools who achieved ‘Nature Hero’ status this year. A special thank you to Glenveagh Homes for their continued support of this great initiative.”

Regarding his schools’ efforts this year, Principal Dáire Diver of St. Peter’s National School, Mountcharles said “Outdoor learning has transformed the way our students connect with nature. They’re more engaged, curious, and passionate about protecting the planet. We would like to give a special mention to Peter Haggan for everything he has done for the development of our school garden and sharing his knowledge of nature and biodiversity. The Nature Hero award is a reflection of all their hard work and dedication”
