Donegal saw 28 per cent increase in sexual offences – CSO figures

NEW crime statistics for Donegal have revealed there was a 28 per cent increase in the number of recorded sexual offences in the county when compared to the same period the previous year.

The latest crime figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) revealed that the number of rape and sexual assault also increased by 19 per cent in the same period.

Driving under the influence also saw a notable rise with 22 per cent increase in offences involving those driving a vehicle while over the legal alcohol limit. Additionally, the number of drug related offences in the county have also increased by 9 per cent.

The CSO data revealed there was an 8 per cent increase in attempts or threats to murder, assaults, harassments and related offences in the same period.

Public order and other social code offences account for the highest number of offences with close to 300 reported in the third quarter of last year, a 9 per cent increase. Disorderly conduct also saw a 9 per cent increase.

There was a 25 per cent increase in burglaries in the Donegal division. Nationally burglary and related offences were up 10 per cent.

However, there was a 33 per cent decrease in theft related offences when compared to the same period last year. Robbery related offences were also down 23 per cent.

Additionally, weapons and explosives offences and offensive weapons offences saw a 12 per cent increase.
