Donegal retain Division 1 status with win over Tyrone

Donegal 2-17 Tyrone 2-13

Donegal are safe in Division 1 for another year after they got the better of Tyrone at MacCumhaill Park today.

It was Declan Bonner’s side first game in seven-and-a-half months and they were good value for their win.

Donegal started well and moved 1-3 to 0-2 ahead after eight minutes with Peadar Mogan scoring a great goal.

However, Tyrone were soon level after Darren McCurry converted a soft penalty.

Declan Bonner’s team raised their game midway through the half with Niall O’Donnell and Ryan McHugh in great form and they were 1-9 to 1-6 ahead at the break.

Tyrone kicked the first two points of the second half, before Jamie Brennan scored a goal for Donegal in the 40th minute.

It was tit-for-tat after that but Donegal were controlling the game well and were still four ahead at the second half water break.

Donegal never looked like losing and late points from Caolan McGonagle, Michael Murphy and Andrew McClean made sure of their win.

Tyrone were poor throughout and while Conor McKenna scored a consolation goal at the death, the final scoreline flattered them.

The sides will meet again in the Ulster Championship in two weeks time, but before that Donegal have a trip to Tralee to meet Kerry in the league next Saturday.
