Donegal ranked as top filming location

By Róise Collins

DONEGAL is fast becoming a hot spot for filmmakers, with the county now ranking fifth among Ireland’s most popular filming locations.

Research from Virgin Media Ireland, which analysed over 250 top movies and TV shows filmed in Ireland, revealed the most in-demand filming locations and Donegal is firmly in the spotlight.

The county’s growing appeal is evident in its inclusion in major blockbuster films, from Star Wars: The Last Jedi to the recent release of Four Letters of Love, featuring Pierce Brosnan and Helena Bonham Carter.

In recent weeks, excitement has been building as Oscar-nominated actor Ciarán Hinds has been spotted filming across Donegal, further cementing the county’s place as a key filming destination.

But the process of bringing a film to Donegal starts long before the cameras roll.

The Donegal Film Office, established by Donegal County Council, plays a crucial role in promoting the region and helping to elevate its profile in the film industry.

“The team I’m working with now, I met for the first time almost two years ago,” said Aideen Doherty from the Donegal Film Office.

Aideen spoke with the Donegal News about how the office helps secure films for the county, which often includes competing with other counties for the chance to host productions.

“Sometimes, a production comes in looking for one location. But once we find out what the script is looking for, we pitch other locations to them to encourage them to choose Donegal,” Aideen explained.

“Once a production is secured, the Film Office works closely with the production company to ensure a seamless transition into filming here,” she added.

“This includes everything from securing licenses and permits to arranging accommodation and casting.”

The Donegal Film Office has already attracted major production companies, including those behind Star Wars, God’s Creatures, In the Land of Saints and Sinners, Obituary, and the award-winning TV show Crá.

“There are other projects in the works that we’re hoping will come through, but until the trucks are rolling down the street, it’s not official,” Aideen laughed.

“Even then, a lot of the time I can’t share much, as many people involved in a film sign non-disclosure agreements.”

Aideen shared how Donegal is fortunate to have dedicated and skilled creatives working within the county.

“We’re blessed with a phenomenal group of people who support the industry here,” she said.

“It’s a solid, dedicated industry, and the people who work in it are passionate about their craft. They are keen to ensure that Donegal is showcased as the beautiful place that it is.”

The economic impact of films developed in Donegal is undeniable. Not only does it boost tourism, but it also acts as a key driver for local economic development.

In 2023, figures show that €9.3 million was directly spent on filming in Donegal. For every euro spent on filming, €25 is generated in the local economy.

To ensure the film industry in Donegal continues to grow sustainably, Aideen stressed the importance of nurturing local talent.

“A lot of the frustration in the industry comes from being a service provider for films coming in, as opposed to developing films in the county,” she said.

“Our focus needs to shift toward supporting our own directors, producers, and writers who are based here in Donegal. We need to give them the opportunity to showcase their work.”

To help foster emerging talent, the Donegal Film Office has introduced several initiatives, including a short film bursary aimed at encouraging creativity and filmmaking activity in the county.
