CANCER groups and members of the public in Donegal will have an opportunity to express their views on the planned new Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry.
The Western Health and Social Care Trust (Western Trust) is inviting the public to come along and express their views at a ‘Focus Group’ in Central Hotel, Donegal Town, tomorrow, Thursday, February 28 from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm.
Ten Focus Groups will be held at various venues across the North West – The Clanree Hotel, Letterkenny, will be the venue next Tuesday, March 12, from 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm.
Site work has already started on the €60 million cross-border project which is due to open in 2016 and is being jointly funded by the Department of Health in Northern Ireland and the Irish Department of Health.
Currently, Letterkenny General Hospital (LGH) provides a limited cancer service while most patients have to make the long trip to either Dublin, Galway or Belfast for radiotherapy.
Ms Una Cardin, Western Trust Radiotherapy Unit Manager said: “The Western Trust Radiotherapy Project Team will host the events and will be there to explain the planned design proposals and to receive public feedback.
“This is your opportunity to contribute to the key design concepts for this exciting health care project in the North West and I would encourage everyone to come along and support the event in their local area.”
The unique project has been described as a “a hospital within a hospital” providing treatments to people with cancer both North and South of the Border.
The new unit will enable the majority of Donegal’s population, an estimated 110,000 people, to have access to radiotherapy services. For further information on the Western Trust’s Radiotherapy Project, log on to their website at www.westerntrust.hscni.net
