THERE are no ‘current plans’ to charge patients at Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) for the pleasure of watching TV, it has been confirmed.
The Donegal News has been reliably informed that the Saolta University Health Care Group, which includes LUH, is considering the introduction of a pay-per-view system in Letterkenny.
When contacted this week, however, a spokesperson for Saolta would only say: “A bedside entertainment monitor has been piloted in a number of hospitals in Ireland and has proved to be successful in improving the patient experience, but there are no current plans to install this system at LGH.”
A similar system was introduced by the NHS in the UK a number of years ago where hospital patients were forced to pay up to £10 a day to watch their favourite programmes.
Jacquie Pearce-Gervis, who chairs watchdog Patient Voice in the UK said: “It is making money out of the vulnerable.”
