Donegal painter in running for top art award

A Letterkenny-based artist has been shortlisted for a prestigious industry award.

Mantas Poderys is the running for the Jackson Painting Prize, an accolade established to champion exceptional artworks by international creators at all points in their career.

In Mantas’s case, his portrait, entitled ‘Sara’, has put him within touching distance of the €6,000 first prize.

He is also shortlisted along with 41 other artists in the People’s Choice category. It requires members of the public to log on and show their support for their preferred painter.

Born in 1990 and originally from Lithuania, Mantas Poderys has been creating art since the age of two.

Mantas’s portrait, Sara, which has caught the eye of the judges.

Since graduating from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, he has exhibited his work throughout Europe and picked up numerous awards, including the 2020 Young Artist of the Year KPMG Award at the Royal Ulster Academy Annual Show.

Voting for the People’s Choice prize closes tomorrow (Tuesday) and encouraging people to get involved before the polls end, Mantas said,

“I’m delighted that my portrait ‘Sara’ has now made it to the shortlist and is amongst 42 successful entries.
“I encourage you to view all shortlisted works.”
