Donegal nurse bags €23,000 on Winning Streak

A Dublin nurse, originally from Donegal went on a Winning Streak last Saturday (3rd March) winning €23,000 in cash on the National Lottery game show on RTE One.

Bernie McGuigan, who lives in Malahide, Co. Dublin, but originally from Co. Donegal was at the Elbow gig in the 3 Arena on Saturday with her husband, sister and brother-in-law when her phone was hopping with calls that she had been selected to appear on the popular game show. She says the excitement was such she remembers little from the concert!

Bernie (44) works in a GP practice in Malahide village. She is relatively new to the job having spent 18 amazing years working in paediatric nursing in Temple Street Children’s Hospital.

Originally from Mountcharles in Donegal Bernie did her nurse training in Great Ormond Street, London, before returning to Dublin where she met her husband of 11 years Macarten (Mac), The couple have two children: Liam (9) and Aoife (7) and says she is outnumbered three to one when it comes to GAA football matches!

Bernie loves GAA and is a Donegal fan through and through despite living in a house with three Dubs. Liam plays hurling and football for St Sylvester’s GAA club in Malahide. In her spare time Bernie enjoys Pilates and yoga.

Her parents, Hilda and John Joe, were as excited as Bernie is about her appearance on the show, and her mother is a longtime fan. They enjoyed their journey to RTE along with a posse of other family members from Mountcharles to cheer Bernie on. Also supporting her were Bernie’s four sisters, Kate, Mags, Hilda Jnr and Eimear, as well as her brothers Sean and Peter.

A total of €147,000 was won on the game show this week. Winning Streak scratch cards offer a range of great instant cash prizes plus a 3-star prize, which gives players the opportunity to enter a draw to appear on the gameshow. Five players are selected to appear on the Winning Streak TV Gameshow and win up to €500,000 instantly on the Grand Prize Wheel. 

Winning Streak scratch cards also offer players the chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime luxury cruise for two worth €5,000. To enter the draw for the Luxury Cruise for two, entrants must collect the 3 letters S-E-A from the stub portion of their Winning Streak scratch card and send those into the National Lottery in the special grey stub envelope which are available from National Lottery retail sales agents. There winners for this week’s cruise is Julie O’Brien from Dublin 7.

The Winning Streak TV Gameshow is based solely on chance and there is no skill involved. To enter, players must submit a 3-star ticket in one of the special 3-star envelopes, which are available from all National Lottery Retail Sales Agents. On the Thursday preceding the gameshow, one hundred 3-star entries are drawn randomly in a preliminary draw that takes place under strict security controls in National Lottery offices. From these 100 entries, the five players for the following show are drawn and their names are featured on the gameshow.
