Donegal natives to feature in new RTÉ series na Féilte

DONEGAL natives are set to feature in a new four-part series exploring the four indigenous Irish festivals on RTÉ One next week.

The show, which will air on October 28, will explore the symbolism and mythology central to Samhain, Imbolg, Bealtaine and Lúnasa.

These festivals have been celebrated for millennia in Ireland and this series explores their history and continual evolution as they respond to the spiritual and communal needs of Ireland in the 21st century.

The series delves into the impact that these ancient traditions have on Irish culture and identity.

Throughout the series, we meet Donegal’s Lilis Ó Laoire, sean nós singer and retired professor of Irish at the University of Galway, and Seosaí Nic Rabhartaigh, singer and folklorist.

Together, they will discuss Irish folk traditions, their richness and the importance of keeping them alive.

These include the traditional games played on Oíche Shamhna, the importance of an slua sí (the fairy hosts) and their resonance with this special night, along with the ancient traditions and mythologies of the ‘otherworld’ that are brought to life on this powerful night.

Episode one of Na Féilte Tine, ‘Samhain’ will air on the Halloween bank holiday, Monday, October 28 at 6.30pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
