Mr Campbell died following a fall while he was hill walking in Donegal on Saturday, April 20.
Taking to social media tonight, Donegal Mountain Rescue said they were tasked at 1.24pm by AGS Galway to Poison Glenn where they were put on full stand-by.
“Once more information was obtained, it was established that there had been a catastrophic accident involving two climbers, one of which had not survived.
“Rescue 118 was tasked to the scene as the DMRT hasty team made their way to the rendezvous point.
“As members of the team approached the casualty’s location, Rescue 118 was already on scene and, after a difficult and technical extraction, airlifted the second casualty to Letterkenny Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
“The team’s rope technicians proceeded to set up two complex rope systems in order to recover the remaining casualty.
“They maneuvered the stretcher back to the RV point where AGS and NAS were waiting.
“The team was stood down at 22:59 hours,” a spokesperson said.
Donegal Mountain Rescue extended their deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.
“We wish to express our sincerest thanks to everyone involved in this difficult and hugely technical incident, including Rescue 118 , An Garda Síochána and National Ambulance Service (NAS),” a spokesperson concluded.
