REVENUE officers have warned Donegal motorists to be wary of cheap fuel following reports of illegal “petrol stretching.”
It involves adding up to 10pc of kerosene to petrol before sellling it to unwitting drivers. Criminals from Monaghan and south Armagh are behind the scam.
Revenue Commissioners, Customs and Excise and Gardai have been investigating the practice after reports of significant fuel contamination in the west, border regions and midlands.
A Revenue source told the Donegal News they had investigated cases of ‘petrol stretching’ at a number of outlets in Donegal.
“Bona fida operators will never get involved,” the source said.
