THIS evening marks the official launch of the fiftieth Donegal International Rally at 8pm at Diver’s Hyundai in Letterkenny.
At 6.30pm however, a very special ceremony will take place in Ballymacool Park when a specially commissioned engraved granite seat will be unveiled to pay tribute to members of Donegal Motor Club, past, present and future and their supporters.
President of Motor Sport Ireland Aiden Harper will attend and the public are invited to come along and mark the occasion.
Chair of Donegal Motor Club Brian Brogan told the Donegal News yesterday that the seat is a joint effort between Donegal Motor Club, Donegal County Council and Motor Sport Ireland.
“It grew from an idea put forward by Cllr Kevin Bradley and we are delighted to be associated with such a great location.
“We would like to see as many club members and members of the public there as possible on Thursday evening,” Mr Brogan said.
As planning for the rally gets fine-tuned a meeting between the Motor Club and emergency services will take place tomorrow afternoon.
Preparations for the rally are going well Mr Brogan said, and it is as popular as ever, if not more so.
“We already have 270 entrants looking to take part in the event but we can only run 200 cars. The rally heads for Inishowen on the Friday to Malin Head and then back. The excitement is building,” he added.
The Wilton Recycling sponsored Donegal International Rally takes place in three weeks, from Friday, June 21 to Sunday, June 23.
