Donegal mother highlights the dangers of Snapchat

by Dionne Meehan

A DONEGAL mother has highlighted the dangers of Snapchat this week after her child was allegedly groomed on the app.

Snapchat is a popular messaging app that lets users exchange pictures and videos, called snaps, that are meant to disappear after they’re viewed.

Sounds relatively harmless? Not in the case for one Donegal family.

Contacting the popular parenting Facebook page, Letterkenny Babies, a distressed mother spoke of her recent experience with the app.

“My 13 year old daughter has snapchat. She got a message from people she does not know. Her location was on. They told her to send naked pictures or they would come to her house. She sent them the pictures. She came to me an hour or so later and cried her eyes out, said she was scared and did not know what to do. I feel sick to my stomach. I do not know what to do. She does not know who this person is. They could even be someone she knows.”

She concluded by urging followers to warn their children about the dangers of using the app.

The incident has been reported to gardaí.
