The away side were able to open up a 1-4 to 1-2 lead but Donegal finished the first half strongly with Joseph Gibbons scoring three points while Thomas Lenehan was also on target.
HT: Donegal 1-6 Monaghan 1-4
Donegal made a good start to the second half as they scored 1-3 on the trot with Kalvin McLaughlin hitting the net.
A fantastic goal from Conor Farrell appeared to kill off the contest when he put his side eight points clear in the 51st minute.
Monaghan didn’t throw in the towel and Harry Hamill and Harry Treanor hit goals while James Ennis nailed a ’45’.
That left just one point between the sides but Jack Gallagher then kicked the insurance score to win it for Donegal.
