Donegal have still got a chance of staying up in Division 1, despite losing to Monaghan in Clones today.

Mayo’s defeat to Tyrone means that Donegal can still finish ahead of the Connacht side if they beat them next week.

Monaghan had the better of the first 25 minutes in Clones and established a 0-7 to 0-2 lead, with Conor McManus scoring three points.

However, Donegal improved and 1-2 from Jamie Brennan brought the visitors back into contention.

A late David Garland free put Monaghan into the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Donegal were in a good position at the break, but Monaghan scored a quickfire 1-2 after the resumption, with Ryan Wylie scoring the goal.

Bonner’s side never got going in the second half and had eight wides during that spell.

The only beacon of light on the day was Mayo’s defeat to Tyrone, and that sets up a win or bust tie in Ballybofey next Sunday. If Donegal win, they will stay up. However, if they fail to do so, they will be relegated to Division 2.
